Olivia explained that her brother used fentanyl to “survive” the symptoms of Lyme disease, a vector-borne disease that is often spread to humans through the bites of infected black-legged ticks. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the joints, heart, and nervous system, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “They said my brother didn’t like to talk about his illness,” she said. “So many people, even those close to her, didn’t know about her Lyme.
